Sam Bennett withdraws from Road World Championships

Sam Bennett has withdrawn from the Road World Championships, scheduled to take place this weekend.

The Carrick-on-Suir sprinter has struggled with injury in recent times and missed the 2021 Tour De France.

He has since returned to action, featuring in the European Road Championships.

However, he says this weekend's event in Belgium has come too early in his return to consider racing.

It takes place over a challenging circuit of over 260 kilometres - a prospect that Bennett described as 'a step too far'.

Cycling Ireland confirmed the news earlier today.

"Cycling Ireland has confirmed Sam Bennett has withdrawn from the men’s road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Flanders, Belgium which takes place on Sunday, 26th September.

"Commenting on his withdrawal from the World Championships, Bennett said:

"It is always an honour to represent Ireland on the international stage.

"However, unfortunately competing in this year’s World Road C’ships will not be possible.

"I am very happy to be back racing pain-free and with each race, I know my fitness levels and race sharpness are improving.

"However, at this stage, a gruelling 260km+ race is probably a step too far.

"I wish Eddie Dunbar, Rory Townsend and Ryan Mullen the very best this weekend and will be supporting them from afar".

Cycling Ireland also extended their best wishes to Bennett for the remainder of the season.

Sunday's event will now feature an Irish team comprising of Eddie Dunbar, Rory Townsend and Ryan Mullen.
