Wayne Barnes under fire after 100 minute match

Wayne Barnes was the focus of French criticism after his display at the end of their Six Nations match with Wales at the weekend.

France eventually won the match 20-18 after almost 20 minutes of added time which even saw a late Welsh sin-binning return to the field of play.

Speaking afterwards French lock Yoann Maestri said: "We were refereed like a small team and it's very painful. Barnes told me that we were not dominant enough in the scrum. But the Welsh were rigging every scrum. They were letting themselves get turned. It's down to the referee to spot it.

"It was verging on nuclear warfare on the sidelines and the referee didn't react," he added.

However, Welsh coach Robert Howley was critical of the French saying: "What happened in the last moments of that game shouldn't ever happen again.

"One of the coaches had a word with their doctor and within a minute of that their tighthead went off. The evidence suggests that it's not in the integrity of our game."

The win saw France finish the tournament in third place while Wales finished in fifth spot - ten points ahead of bottom placed Italy.
