England were reduced to 14 men after Charlie Ewels was given marching orders for a high tackle on James Ryan.
The tackle was drawn to the attention of the referee by the TMO after Ryan remained on the deck after a hard hit from the England player.
On replay, Ewels came into the tackle high and collided with Ryan's head before any other part of his body.
Johnny Sexton converted the resulting penalty to put Ireland ahead in the crucial Six Nations clash.
James Lowe increased Ireland's lead shortly after with a brilliant try down the left-flank.
