State of Origin series goes to a decider

The 2017 State of Origin series will go to a decider after a last-gasp converted try gave Queensland the win in Game 2.

The Queensland Maroons, the dominant side over the last decade, needed to win on Wednesday in Sydney, after losing the opening fixture 28-4 at home in Brisbane last month.

Valetine Holmes opened the scoring for the visitors after he touched down in the corner early on. However, the New South Wales Blues came storming back with scores from Jarryd Hayne, Josh Morris and Mitchell Pierce which gave the hosts a 16-6 lead at the break.

NSW dominated the statistics at half-time and arguably should have been further in front had Hayne passed out wide during an attack late in the half.

The home side's inability to kill the game off came back to haunt them when a Dane Gagai brace in the second period brought Queensland level.

Johnathan Thurston kicked a pressurised conversion from out wide in the dying minutes to secure an unlikely victory.

The teams now head for a series decider at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane in July.
