The men's Six Nations is set to go ahead as planned next month, but it's been confirmed that the women's and under 20 championships have been postponed.

It's hoped that the respective competitions can be played at later dates in 2021, with tournament organisers saying they plan to announce a revised schedule later this month.

The Ireland men's team are due to begin their campaign away to Wales on Sunday February 7th, with France set to visit Dublin a week later.

However, the French government say they will need further guarantees about the country's Covid-19 guidelines if they are to fulfill their fixture against Andy Friend's side.

In a statement, tournament organisers say they will work with respective governments and unions to ensure the tournament is played in a safe manner.

"Six Nations Rugby is in constant dialogue with each of its Governmental authorities and is further reinforcing its Covid-19 protocols," their statement says.

Speaking of the postponement for the Irish women's team, who still need to complete their qualification campaign for this year's Rugby World Cup, Ireland's Director of Womens and Sevens rugby Anthony Eddy says it's frustrating, but adds that he is fully supportive of the decision.

"This is disappointing news that we fully accept is in the best interests of everyone involved. Our training programme is reviewed on an ongoing basis to adapt to ever changing circumstances and our players have demonstrated a commendable attitude and resilience in this regard while adhering to strict safety protocols.

"We will also continue to work with World Rugby to ensure our Rugby World Cup 2021 qualification games can take place in a timely and safe manner," Eddy says.
