Munster and Ireland rugby legend Ronan O'Gara is to be awarded the Freedom of Cork this year.
The Lord Mayor of Cork, Des Cahill, confirmed the news on Twitter last night, stating that fellow members of the Cork City council accepted his proposal to give O'Gara the honour.
The Irish Examiner reports that all but two councillors supported the move, with a conferring ceremony expected to take place in May or June.

In a rugby career that stretches over two decades, the former outhalf collected 128 caps for Ireland, making him the country's second most capped player behind Brian O'Driscoll.
One of his most memorable moments in an Irish jersey was a Grand Slam winning drop-goal against Wales in 2009.
He won two Heineken Cups with Munster and made over 200 appearances for the province. He was also involved in three British and Irish Lions tours.

Responding to the news, O'Gara said he was 'humbled and honoured' by the gesture. He now joins a host of sporting legends who have previously received the award including, Roy Keane, Sonia O’Sullivan and Seán Óg Ó hAilpín.
O'Gara retired from playing professional rugby in 2013, and is currently working as the defence coach for Racing 92.
