Australia's chances of World Cup success this Autumn have been strengthened by the news that Australian players playing abroad are now eligible to play for the team.
Previously, players had to be playing in Australia, to be allowed play for the Wallabies.
Effective immediately, overseas-based players can now be selected for Australia if they have played more than 60 tests and have held a professional contract with Australian Rugby for at least seven years.
Players like Matt Giteau, who starred for Toulon against Leinster last weekend may now force their way into Michael Cheika's World Cup plans.
Speaking to the Australian Rugby Union website, the former Leinster coach was happy to welcome some experienced players back into the squad.
“It’s important to first and foremost recognise those players who are currently making a daily contribution to Rugby in Australia, but at the same time not discount those elite-level and experienced Test players who have already invested so much into the code over a long period. From speaking with many of them, I know they still have a huge desire to represent Australia, and would do so to the very best of their abilities if ever called upon once again."
The Union's CEO Bill Pulver hopes to see many Australian stars return home to continue their careers.
“We believe having the option to select overseas-based players to represent the Qantas Wallabies, provided that they have made a commitment to return to Australian Rugby, will encourage the repatriation of Australians currently playing in foreign competitions and increase the pool of talent available to Australian Super Rugby teams and the Qantas Wallabies.”
Many Australian internationals such as former captain James Horwill have already planned to leave Australia after the World Cup to pursue a career overseas.
