Grainne Shiell, physiotherapist and co-author on a report on injuries in schools' rugby, spoke to Ger Gilroy this evening on Off the Ball, revealing some of the prevalent data from her studies. One of the more notable aspects of her findings was that over four people per game had to leave the field of play with injuries in schools’ rugby.
“There was 4.23 injuries every game and that was players that would have had to leave the field of play because of injury, so the numbers, I’d suppose, per game were quite high” she said.
Central to the report, however, was the aspect of recurrent injuries in young players, with almost a fifth of those injuries at Senior Cup level having been sustained before.
“Recurrent injuries in, I’d suppose Senior Cup players was higher than Junior Cup players, that 17% of these injuries were recurrent injuries, so they’d already been reported previously” explained Shiell.
“We know from previous studies, if you have a lower-limb injury, you are pre-disposed to that injury re-occurring and that’s just happening in these players, it’s just a pity to see it happening at such a young age.”
