New Zealand captain Richie McCaw has said he is likely to retire at the end of the current season, but he won’t confirm anything just yet.
The All Blacks flanker said to New Zealand’s TVNZ: “In all likelihood I can’t see that I carry on playing” beyond this season.
However, the 34 year old was reluctant to offer any definitive statements, saying:
“You don’t wanna go making big (statements) now and then … change your mind.”
There have been rumours recently of a big money move to Europe for McCaw, but he put a half to that line of thinking when he said, “there certainly won’t be any going overseas or any of that.”
He went on to say he would only continue to play if he was motivated for the right reasons.
“You gotta ask yourself why you play the game,” McCaw said.
“It’s nice to play and get well looked after because of that but Ive always said that if I was enjoying it and wanted to carry on playing then I would play here.
“If I’m not enjoying it and decide I’ve got to go off just play to earn some cash I think that would be pretty tough.”
