Joe Schmidt has confirmed Jack Conan will miss the rest of the World Cup due to injury, with Ulster's Jordi Murphy set to be called up as a replacement.

The Irish Head Coach confirmed that Conan would return to Ireland for treatment following Ireland's defeat to Japan on Saturday.

Conan was ruled out of the game against Japan after suffering an injury in training and Schmidt confirmed after the game that he had suffered a fracture in his foot.

The Leinster number eight had impressed for Ireland in the 27-3 win over Scotland last weekend and Schmidt would have been hopeful the injury wouldn't be as bad as first feared.

However, Conan was seen in a protective boot at Ireland's game against Japan this morning and was the only player not to take part in training sessions since his injury.

Conan's replacement is likely to be Ulster's Jordi Murphy who has been on standby for the World Cup squad. Murphy was due to play for his province against Ospreys on Friday but was withdrawn from the side shortly before kick-off.

Speaking after the match Schmidt also gave an update on the fitness of Rob Kearney.

"He's got a decent shiner but he is feeling okay now," the New Zealander told the post-match press conference. "He failed his HIA as far as I know, so if he doesn't pass his HIA2 and HIA£ he will have a confirmed concussion and that will rule him out of the Russia game."
