James Lowe and Jack Conan joined Off The Ball to discuss Ireland's Six Nations campaign, and the attitude to risk-taking in attack.

The team came in for some criticism as to their attacking style after two losses against Wales and - in particular - France. Lowe spoke about the attitude in the camp after the matches.

"Two very frustrating games, we were so close, yet so far away. Then all the badgers come out of the woodworks to decipher why we are not winning.

"We have made leaps and bounds against Italy, we played a more expansive style of rugby, we pushed on the play a lot more and were able to convert a lot of pressure into points. Obviously, there are still areas to work on, but we are going in the right direction.

"Everyone is in the same boat wanting to go in the same direction, so I find we are in a good spot. With Scotland around the corner, hopefully we can get over that hurdle."

So what was the issue with attack at that point, and have the team addressed it?

"Catty hit the nail on the head that it is about having confidence and the skills in the things that we train and practice from Monday to Friday, and being able to deliver those skills under pressure at the highest level.

"He can put together all the game plans, the maps, the attacking structures but at the end of the day, come game time you have to perform in front of people that want to knock your head off.

"We made steps in the right direction, but there is a new beast around the corner that we are definitely looking forward to. That comes with new challenges and we are looking forward to it."

Italy

The result against Italy gave a fairer reflection of this Ireland side's capabilities, according to Lowe. He credits the result to a different opponent and slight change in mindset.

"There is a bit of both, obviously Italy's defensive system is a little bit different, and teams have scored a decent amount of points against them. That doesn't take anything away from them being there trying to knock your head off!

"Scotland are another step up in terms of their defence. But you can talk about a team as much as want; if you don't got out and execute your game plan then it counts for nothing. Here is hoping that it is another sunny day in Edinburgh.

"It is down to us, at the end of the day."

Conan was particularly delighted with the Italy result in light of his injury setbacks over the last couple of years.

"It has been a tough two years with a lot of ups and downs. Putting it in perspective, there was a pandemic in the middle of it so I don't feel too sorry for myself.

"To just have the opportunity to run around with the lads and have another opportunity to wear the green jersey was incredible. As you get older, you appreciate things and enjoy them a lot more.

"It definitely was the cap I enjoyed the most because it was a long time coming, there were a lot of setbacks and even to play 20 minutes was fantastic."

Lowe spoke about the nicknames (that they can broadcast) within the camp.

"Jack's nickname in the team is 'moanin' Conan!' It has stuck as well, I'm not the only one who calls him it."

Do the nicknames extend as far as the captain?

"Sexto is in a good mood at the moment! He played well at the weekend - didn't throw a tantrum anyway, which is good to see!"
