Alan Quinlan believes it is a risk to go the Rugby World Cup with just two specialist scrum-halves.
Ian Madigan will cover the No 9 position as the third option, despite being far from a specialist in that role and speaking on Off The Ball alongside Irish Times' rugby correspondent Gerry Thornely, the former Munster and Ireland back-row says Joe Schmidt's decision did raise eyebrows.
"I was surprised to say the least. With the amount of utility backs that can cover centre that you'd load up at half-back for sure. It is a risk. I think because we're speaking so much about it, none of them will get injured. That's the way I'm thinking now," he said.
Quinlan also shared his thoughts on Donncha O'Callaghan's impending departure from Munster for a move abroad saying that "it's a great adventure for him and I wish him well" and revealing insights into his great work ethic.
