Ireland earned a 30 point victory over Scotland to force England to muster victory over France by more than 26 points in order to take the Six Nations title from Joe Schmidt's side.
A strong performance from Ireland meant they surpassed the points difference mark set by Wales after today's early game against Italy.
Paul O'Connell and Sean O'Brien gave Ireland perfect start with tries, which were both converted by Jonathan Sexton.
Greig Laidlaw got Scotland on the board with an 18th minute penalty, before Finn Russell got their first try just before the break to leave Ireland in front by a 20-10 scoreline.
Listen to the full-time report from Off The Ball's Cian Murtagh at Murrayfield:
Jared Payne got the Irish back on track when he added a third try nine minutes into the second half, before O'Brien finished off a fine move to stretch Ireland's lead.
Stuart Hogg appeared to score a late try for Scotland but the TMO ruled that touch was not made, thanks to Jamie Heaslip's last gasp tackle as Ireland won 40-10 at Murrayfield.
It means England must beat France by more than 26 points at Twickenham to prevent Ireland from winning the Six Nations for a second year in a row.
