Ireland enjoy unprecedented success at the Sydney 7s

Ireland's Women's Sevens team have reached the cup quarter-finals of a World Series event for the first time in their history.

Anthony Eddy's side finished in second place in Pool B at the Sydney 7s, to guarantee the team their best ever finish in a World Series event.

Ireland recorded their first ever win over Fiji in the opening game, to start the historic day. Two tries from Amee-Leigh Murphy-Crowe and another from captain Lucy Mulhall helped Ireland to an excellent 19-12 win.

In the second game, Ireland lost 29-0 to the hosts Australia. Last year, Australia won the Olympic Games tournament, and are favourites to win on home soil this weekend.

Ireland's final game saw the team defeat Brazil to book their spot in the quarter-finals. A hat-trick from Murphy-Crowe helped the team to a 33-5 win.

The team will know play England in Saturday's quarter-final. A loss to the English will send Ireland into the Plate semi-finals, while a win will put Eddy's team in the cup semi-finals.

Either way, the Sydney tournament has been deemed a success for the Irish team, and follows from winning the Challenge Trophy at the Dubai 7s in December.
