Ireland consolidate grip on fourth place in world rankings

Ireland have consolidated their grip on fourth place in the world rankings with their 19-9 win over France at the weekend.

Joe Schmidt's side rose from 83.75 to 84.18 and the gap to fifth placed Scotland is a full two ranking points after the Scots dislodged Wales with their 29-13 win on Saturday.

Wales drop to seventh behind South Africa while France also fall a place due to Scotland's win.

The top four remains unchanged with New Zealand leading the way ahead of England, Australia and Ireland.

With the draw for the pool stages of the 2019 Rugby World Cup taking place shortly after this year's Six Nations - a coveted top four ranking is something to keep in mind with two rounds remaining.

Ireland head to Cardiff to play Wales in two weeks time.

In the women's code, Ireland remain in fifth but are only fractionally behind France after beating the French 13-10 at Donnybrook on Sunday.

It's as you were for the top eight in the women's game but as the pool draw for this year's Women's World Cup has already been made, the rankings carry less significane at the moment.

Like their male counterparts, Ireland will be in Wales in a fortnight.
