The message is indeed a strong one from Professor Michael Molloy.
The eminent consultant rheumatologist, and chair of the concussion advisory group at the Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland joined George on the Right Hook to express his strong views on the sort of procedures that need to be put in place to protect sportsmen and women from concussion.
Professor Molloy believes concussion should be treated as a mild traumatic brain injury, while the diagnosis "needs to be immediate", and in the case of children, they should be kept out of school, not allowed to play games on their telephones and allowed to rest. "If children don't rest after concussion, they won't recover"
On the issue of head gear, Molloy has a stark warning. "Even the most sophisticated head gear will not protect your brain".
Professor Molloy, a former Irish rugby international, worries about the future of the game. “I certainly am worried about the game of rugby; the size of the players, the contact forces, the number of injuries we’re seeing is a big worry. I think the game is going to have to be looked at very carefully”
