Ronan O'Gara sat down for an interview last night with Ger Gilroy at the Off the Ball Roadshow in the Cork Opera House.
The spoke about the highs and lows of O'Gara's career to date including his battles with Jonny Sexton to his coaching career in the Top 14 with Racing 92.
They also spoke about the reports in March 2003 suggesting that O'Gara was to quit the game and move to Florida to join the Miami Dolphins in the NFL for a $12million contract. O'Gara's contract with the IRFU was up after the World Cup that Autumn but he confirmed last night that the dealings with the Dolphins only went as far as a handshake with their then owner Wayne Huzienga.
"I shook Wayne Huzienga's hand in the Old Head of Kinsale on a Friday afternoon. My father-in-law is, I think a director is that what they call it down in the Old Head of Kinsale. I was down there for a lunch and this was the day before mobile phones really. I was playing for (Cork) Con on the Saturday and the story broke in the Echo on the Saturday night. And then the Sundays ran with it. And the Mondays. I can recall the meeting room in the Irish team hotel on the Sunday when we reconvened and we had to release a statement over something that was just the shake of a hand."
