Gatland praises defence as Lions down Crusaders

Lions Head Coach Warren Gatland praised his side's defence after they overcame the Crusaders in Christchurch on Saturday.

The home side went into the tie averaging roughly five tries per match in Super Rugby but their northern visitors kept them down to a single penalty.

A superb defensive display from the Gatland's men breathed life into the tour after disappointing displays in their first two matches.

The Crusaders were unbeaten in 2017 and were viewed by many as the unofficial fourth test.

Instead, the Lions pressured the hosts from the off as they downed the most successful team in Super Rugby history.

"I thought our defence was outstanding," Gatland said, adding: "our line-out was excellent, set-piece pretty good. We knew we trained well with this team. They had run really well this last couple of days.

"We knew we were going to get a performance. We spoke about the more time we get together, the better we'll get. So there's still a lot of things for us to work on and we know we can get better," he added.
