Gatland keeps cards close to chest ahead of New Zealand clash

British and Irish Lions head coach Warren Gatland is keeping his cards close to his chest ahead of naming his matchday squad to face New Zealand in Saturday's first Test.

Several fringe players made a case in their 34-6 win over the Chiefs this morning, including Jack Nowell who scored two tries and Elliot Daly who also impressed.

Gatland told Sky Sports, he'd told the pair to play for a place.

"I spoke to both wingers and said there's an opportunity for them in that position and a few other positions as well," he said. "It wasn't shut out.

"It was so important for these guys to get a win tonight. If they're not involved on Saturday, with the injury rate we've got, you never know what will happen from the first to the third Test."

Nowell insisted his performance was symptomatic of the Lions' all round display and said they played with freedom.

"We want to come out here and be remembered. The first couple of midweek games for us haven't gone our way. Discipline was massive for us, but we had nothing to lose out there today.

"We wanted to play with a bit of excitement and score a few tries - finish the last midweek game with a bang heading into the Test series."
