Former Australian captain James Horwill commits to Harlequins until 2020

Former Australian captain James Horwill has committed his future to Harlequins until 2020, the club announced earlier on Tuesday.

Horwill arrived in England in 2015 after signing from the Queensland Reds who he led to Super Rugby glory in 2011.

The 31 year old had played 62 times for his native Australia and captained them 16 times, including during the 2013 Lions series.

Speaking at the announcement of the contract extension, Harlequins Director of Rugby, John Kingston, said: “From the moment James joined Harlequins 18 months ago, he has shown himself to be both a world class player and an outstanding leader.

“His infectious enthusiasm and drive illustrates exactly why he captained Australia on 16 occasions and he has proved a shining example to the rest of the squad.

“In extending his contract to the summer of 2020, he has crucially committed himself long term to the Harlequins family. This signing is a statement of our intent for the coming years," he added.

The Australian himself said: “I’m excited to be able to extend my time at Harlequins, I’ve fallen in love with the place. I’ve been fortunate to be part of such a great group of guys and a great supporter base.

"I’ve been very lucky that they have opened their arms to me and my family from the get go; it’s fantastic to be able to stay a bit longer and help the group achieve some special things,” he added.
