Fitzgerald: I'm in Ireland XV's to replace Zebo, not replicate him

Luke Fitzgerald has replaced Simon Zebo on Ireland's left wing for their Six Nations finale on Saturday, but that doesn't mean he will be replicating the Munster man's style of play against Scotland at Murrayfield.

The 27-year-old will make his long-awaited return to green in Edinburgh, and is happy that Joe Schmidt will let him loose to create and wreak havoc on the Scots' rearguard.

"I don't do what Simon does - I do what I do," said Fitzgerald. "That's what I'm in the team to do. I think probably that lateral movement, it's the strongest part of my game - that footwork.

"Beating guys, drawing in defenders ... creating opportunities for myself and others. That's what I'm in the team to do.

"Fifty-per-cent of the game is defence - that's a huge part of the game for me.

"I can't really try to be anything else other than what I am, so that's what I'm going to try to do."

Being picked wasn't a surprise to Fitzgerald, but he admits he was over-the-moon when the call came: "I kind of felt like I was pushing really hard," he said. "I was probably pretty close [to being picked] before the English game.

"I've worked really hard to get back into this position."

"I'm absolutely delighted to be involved this weekend for the big one," he added. "I've been reminded constantly today that it was four years ago since I my last start in a Six Nations match."
