Farrell hints that Leinster's Lowe isn't the finished article just yet

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell says that James Lowe will be part of his plans for the autumn.

Leinster's Kiwi winger will become eligible to play for Ireland at the beginning of November.

The 28-year old is likely to be the last player to avail of the three-year eligibility rule that's made Irish internationals of Bundee Aki, Jean Kleyn and CJ Stander.

Lowe won't be part of Ireland's Six Nations campaign, with the rearranged games against Italy and France coming at the end of October.

Beyond that, the flying winger will be free to prove himself to Farrell.

"I think he's been great," Farrell told a press conference on Thursday, "I think he's been a great tonic for Irish rugby, really.

"He's played some outstanding rugby, but like all players, we'll see how he comes back - whether he gets back into form in the early part of the season.

"There are some big games for him to show his hand.

"He's the same as everyone else going forward. He does qualify at the beginning of November, which means he's available to us.

"We've got to make sure that we get selection right accordingly, and he'll be part of those plans the same as everyone else."

When asked what Lowe can bring to the squad, Farrell suggested that there are some gaps in his development to be bridged before he can step into the international sphere.

"He's a big guy, he's strong," Farrell said, "He loves getting on the ball as much as he possibly can, he comes off his wing, he's hungry for the ball.

"He doesn't like getting tackled that much, he's got a great left boot and he's good in the air as well.

"He's a great all-round player. I'm sure that he thinks there are parts of his game that he needs to improve, and hopefully we can see him in top form and putting his hand up and push for claims for the Irish jersey.
