Bonus points in Six Nations wouldn't work - Eddie O'Sullivan

The possibility of any team winning a Six Nations Grand Slam was snuffed out after Ireland's defeat to Wales. But what of proposals to add bonus points to the tournament's scoring structure?

Former Ireland head coach Eddie O'Sullivan does not think it is a great idea and pointed out some of the main flaws on Off The Ball.

"The bonus points thing doesn't work mathematically as it stands. If you think about it, a team could win the Grand Slam and not win the tournament with the bonus point system because if they won five matches without a bonus point, that would be 20 points in the bag," said Eddie.

"But another team could win four matches with a bonus point - that's 20 points also - and if they picked up a bonus point for losing a game, it gives them 21. So you could have the Grand Slam winners in second place which is extra-ordinary."

Eddie was on tonight's show with Trevor Hogan and the two looked back at an incredible final day of action in this year's Six Nations.

"There's no way any other finish could have come close to that," said Trevor of the drama of Saturday, while the duo shared their concerns about Scotland as Ireland hammered them, with Trevor describing the Scot's performance as "pathetic".

They also looked at the problems of Italy and France in this year's Six Nations.
