Australian rugby great Drew Mitchell announces retirement

Australia's record World Cup try-scorer Drew Mitchell has announced his retirement from rugby on social media.

During his career, the winger earned 71 caps for the Wallabies between 2005 and 2016. The Toulon player has been affected by injuries in recent years, including a thigh problem, a torn hamstring and groin issues. He is expected to officially conclude his career at the end of the Top 14 season.

He scored a record 14 tries in the 2015 Rugby World Cup, one try short of the overall record set by All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu, and South Africa's Bryan Habana.

A post on his Twitter account reads:

Mitchell has spent the last four years at the French club, winning two European Champions Cups, as well as a Top 14 title in the 2013-2014 season. 

The 33-year-old also lined out for the Queensland Reds, Western Force and Waratahs during his time in the Super Rugby competition.
