Australia beat Fiji in season opener

Australia eased to a 34-14 win over Fiji at AAMI Park in Melbourne.

The home side didn't have to wait long get the scoreboard ticking over after Israel Folau dotted down with five minutes on the clock. Bernard Foley added the extras.

The Wallabies extended their lead to 10-0 four minutes later when Foley slotted over a penalty.

Henry Speith added a second try for Australia after good build-up play from Higginbotham, Haylett-Petty and Folau to bring the score out to 15-0.

Folau was yellow-carded for a high tackle on Dawai but the sin-binning did little to halt the home side's momentum.

The game did open up for Fiji with the one-man advantage but they were unable to cross the whitewash as Australia's scramble defence kept them at bay.

Foley kicked another penalty in the 29th minute and the Wallabies took a lead of 18-0 into the break.

The full-back continued where he left off in the second half and scored his second try of the game in the corner with Foley converting again.

The visitors wouldn't lie down and scored a try of their own in the 61st minute when Goneva raced in after Australia coughed up the ball and a quick turnover from Volavola.

Australia upped the ante and Stephen Moore touched down after a rolling maul close to the line. Foley converted again to bring the score out to 32-7.

Fiji fought back though and Nagusa scored a late consolation in the 78th minute.

However, the scoring wasn't finished and Henry Speith dotted down in the corner after the clock went red to bring the final score out to 34-14.
