Roy Keane emerges as front-runner to take Salford City manager's job

Roy Keane could be set for a remarkable return to management with Salford City, having been out of the game since his role as Republic of Ireland assistant manager ended in 2018.

The Manchester United legend was in attendance for the League Two side's 2-2 draw with Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

That game proved to be the final game in charge for Graham Alexander, who was sacked from the role yesterday. He leaves the club fifth in the table, having gone unbeaten in their opening five matches.

Keane was sat with Paul Scholes and Gary Neville at the match at the weekend, with Scholes yesterday placed in interim charge of the team.

Reports this morning suggest Keane is an early front-runner for the position, with the club owned by his former United teammates Scholes, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, and Nicky Butt.

Speaking at the recent OTB Remote Roadshow with Cadbury, Gary Neville told us he has seen quite a bit of Keane of late.

"Obviously we go to the Salford games, we have the odd night out every month or two. I've seen Roy quite a few times since he's been on Sky and he's come down to a couple of Salford games in the last few weeks."

A statement from the club yesterday had announced the change in management that brings Scholes in temporarily.

"The club met with Graham this morning and after discussion have agreed to part company. The club would like to thank Graham for his contribution and all his hard work.

"In his first season he guided the team to Wembley, resulting in promotion to League 2 and in his second season he reached the Leasing.com Trophy final.

"The club would like to wish him all the best and success in the future.

"Paul Scholes will act as the interim head coach while the club looks to secure a new manager. Warren Joyce, currently in isolation, will join Paul once he is able to."

Keane, who has previously managed Sunderland and Ipswich Town, has also had coaching positions at Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest. He also had the five-year stint under Martin O'Neill with the international team, a stint that ended two years ago.

Keane is currently working with Sky Sports as a pundit, while Warren Joyce is expected to re-join the coaching team at Salford in some capacity after a Covid-19 enforced period of self-isolation.
