Rory McIlroy 'excited' to represent Ireland at 2020 Olympics

Rory McIlroy says he's 'excited' to play for Ireland at next year's Toyko Olympics.

He'd pulled out of the 2016 games, citing fears over the Zika virus and admitted that he was torn in his decision over who to represent.

The four-time major winner has now confirmed his intentions to tee it up in Japan, having previously said he would 'more than likely' take part.

“I’m excited to play the Olympics and call myself an Olympian,” the world number two told The Golf Channel ahead of this week's Zozo Championship in Japan.

“Coming to such a golf-crazy country like Japan helps. It’s a really good atmosphere and just being here this week and seeing the enthusiasm of the fans makes me look forward to coming back next year and playing the Olympics.”

McIlroy admitted he had struggled to decide whether to play for Ireland or Britian in 2016 but says he's fully committed to Ireland:

"I've had to deal with things in regard to the Olympics that others haven’t had to and that brings questions and difficulties," hed said.

"But at the end of the day I thought I can’t let that stuff ruin my experience of going to the Olympics and playing."
