Roddy and Stuey on Athone Town and Rory Patterson

The first managerial departure of the SSE Airtricity League season took place this week as Mick Cooke left bottom side Athlone Town after 10 defeats from 10.

The former Drogheda United boss has been replaced by Keith Long and tonight Stuey Byrne told us that a change was probably for the best for both parties.

"It looks like it's been organized and planned well," said Stuey, explaining that the decision was likely made two weeks ago. He added that stopping the deluge of goals conceded was Long's first major challenge.

Cooke's predecessor Roddy says the gulf between the top division and the second tier can be too vast.

"Bringing a club up is fine, it's brilliant," said Roddy who led Athlone to promotion. "However if you don't add to it, it's going to be a struggle for sure."

The lads discussed the form of champions St Patricks Athletic who are getting back into form and going "up the gears".

Derry City boss Roddy also spoke about the situation with last season's top scorer Rory Patterson who has been left out of a number of games.

"We'll see how things settle down, what chances we create and the dynamic of the team. Can the other nine players put enough in to basically make a little bit of allowance for a lack of certain things. And if you can do that, you're always going to put a finisher in your team," said Roddy, who admits the reaction to the decision among Derry fans has not been great.
