Roberto Martinez to remain in charge of Belgium until 2022

Roberto Martinez has signed a new contract to stay on as manager of Belgium until the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

The former Everton boss was appointed by Belgium in 2016 as a replacement for Marc Wilmots, who was sacked after a quarter-final exit at Euro 2016.

Commenting on his new deal, Martinez said: "Because of the EURO 2020 postponement we could not possibly end our collaboration already now.

"The RBFA has an ambitious plan that I look forward to with great enthusiasm, both in the short and long term.

"The next two and a half years will be very intense for our national team, with the European Championship, Nations League, 2020 World Cup qualifying matches and the World Cup in Qatar itself.

"I can only be happy and proud that I can continue working and prepare the future of Belgian football."

Martinez guided Belgium to the last four of the World Cup in Russia two years and they are currently top of the FIFA world rankings.

The Red Devils have the likes of Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku in their squad so they will be expected to challenge in the business end of Euro 2020 and World Cup 2022.

They qualified for Euro 2020 with 10 wins from 10 in their group before for the tournament was postponed by a year due to the coronavirus.

"With the Nations League League, the European Championship and the 2022 World Cup, it will probably be the most important years in our football history," said Peter Bossaert, the Belgian Football federation CEO.

"We wanted to do everything we could so that our team could start this cycle in optimal conditions.

"With Roberto, we keep not only a top coach, a true gentleman, but also the ideal ambassador for Belgian football."
