Republic of Ireland women's team win 3-0 in Montenegro

The Republic of Ireland women's team have boosted their chances of qualifying for next year's European Championships.

Diane Caldwell, Katie McCabe and Denise O'Sullivan were on target in a 3-nil win away to Montenegro.

Vera Pauw's side go top of Group I with 13 points from a possible 15 to date though they still have two games to come with top seeds Germany.

"We knew coming here obviously after the Greece game that it was going to be tough," McCabe told Off The Ball after the match.

"They were always going to put players behind the ball and try and frustrate us and that's what they did. I'm just delighted we got the three goals and three points and we can head back home on top of the group.

Caldwell's header to opening the scoring in the 12th minute was a carbon-copy of last Thursday's goal against Greece with McCabe's free kick headed back to Caldwell by Louise Quinn.

"We've got terrific girls who can head the ball, with the likes of Lou and Diane in the box it's just up to me to put into the right area of the box, it was an exact replica of last Thursday and I was just happy to see it hit the back of the net.

"It's obviously something you practice over a prolonged period of time and I enjoy taking set pieces," the Ireland captain added.

McCabe also admits they had to patient in trying to kill the game in the second-half:

"The goals were always going to come, it was just a matter of when. I'd be more worried if we weren't creating chances. It was nice to get that second goal and I was absolutely to see Denise (O'Sullivan) get on the score-sheet because she's been playing brilliantly."
