Willie Mullins' Sharjah wins the Matheson Hurdle for third consecutive year

Willie Mullins got his 16th winner of the week on the final day of the Christmas Festival at Leopardstown.

His Sharjah, with son Patrick on board, won the feature race of the day - the Matheson Hurdle, for a third consecutive time.

The seven-year-old, who went off at a starting price of 11/2, came home ahead of Aspire Tower and Petit Mouchoir.

The favourite, another Mullins horse, Saint Roi was fourth.

It's the eighth time that the Carlow based trainer has saddled the winner of the Grade One contest.

Mullins also won the other Grade One race of the day - the Neville Hotels Novice Steeplechase.

His Monkfish came home ahead of Latest Exhibition and Conflated, after being guided to victory by Paul Townend, whose dream partnership with Mullins shone this festive period.

Mullins and Townend guided had a particularly good day on Sunday with wins for Chacun Pour Soi, Appreciate It, and Castlebawn West.

The big race on Day three at Limerick - the Grade Two Grant Thornton Hurdle, was won by Gordon Elliott's Grand Roi after being guided home by Denis O'Regan.
