Prosecutors investigating possible match fixing at French Open

The Paris prosecutor's office is investigating potential match fixing at this year's French Open.

They're looking into "organised gang fraud" and "active and passive sports corruption" related to a first round match in the women's doubles.

The investigation was launched last Thursday, a day after the match in question.

Romanian duo Andreea Mitu and Patricia Maria Tig beat Russia's Yana Sizikova and Madison Brengle 7-5, 6-4 to progress to the second round.

According to information obtained by L'Equipe in France and Germany's Die Welt, the National Gaming Authority in France were alerted to suspicious betting patterns during the match.

Large bets were placed in Paris itself and in several other countries. The fifth game of the second set was the subject of bets of several thousand euro in foreign countries.

The Romanian duo won that particular game on Sizikova's serve, with the game won by the Russian double-faulting.

Die Welt have claimed that one player is part of the authorities' investigations.

Match-fixing among players is sadly not uncommon. Last year saw 20 individuals receiving bans for betting manipulation from the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU).

The TIU are yet to comment on the case involving Sizikova/Brengle and Mitu/Tig.

The Romanian duo went on to be beaten in the third round by second seeds Karen Mladenovic and Timea Babos.
