The potential Brexit upside for League of Ireland

As things stand, we're still none the wiser about the real impact of Brexit. And the same goes for how it affects football.

Not just the Premier League, but also how it touches on the League of Ireland and Irish players in the UK.

But today, we tried to get to the bottom of the matter.

Scottish sports lawyer Laura McCallum joined us and broke down the key points to look out for.

On the League of Ireland, she explained the potential upsides if Brexit happens in regards to keeping Under-18 players here.

Article 19

"My prediction is the League of Ireland could potentially benefit from the fact that the transfers of minors rule will no longer be enjoyed by clubs in the UK," she explained.

McCallum pointed to the current rules and the effect Brexit will have.

"FIFA's regulations on the status and transfer of players are the regulations that govern the entire transfer system as we know it," she said.

"They currently have a rule within the regulations - Article 19 - which is in relation to the transfer of minors.

"Now, the general rule is that international transfers of players is only permitted if the player is over 18."

While "three exceptions" exist to that current regulation, Brexit will impact one of those.

"But the main one is  that it's an intra-EU transfer or a European Economic Area transfer.

"So it has to be club to club. So a club in Italy to a club in England would be allowed because it's intra-EU. Once the UK leaves the EU and Brexit triggers, that rule will no longer be enjoyed. Or that exception will no longer be enjoyed by clubs in the UK."
