“There’s a lot of poisonous stuff. People can be mean" | Shane Lowry on why he avoids social media

Shane Lowry was talking to Eoin Sheahan on Wednesday’s OTBAM about how ‘poisonous’ people can be online.

Lowry especially avoids Twitter and instead reserves its use for business with his agent in charge of his account now. He does continue to use Instagram but has become disillusioned with social media as a whole.

“I actually don’t have it on my phone (Twitter) but we use it for commercial stuff or whatever when we need to.”

“I use my Instagram account but I think social media can be a bit poisonous sometimes especially the abuse you get on it is not ideal. I even think when you’re going well, people bigging you up and telling you how great you are, you don't need that either.”

While Lowry used to enjoy Twitter, he has had to quit his online commentary of sports due to the negativity. He also described it as poisonous despite it being a good source of news.

“I used to love Twitter because I’m a big sports fan and it was great for news. I used to tweet a lot about different sports. I don’t do it any more. I wasn’t a fan of the negativity.”

The PGA tour-winning golfer, who is celebrating 10 years since that famous Irish Open victory, also explained his reasons for playing golf with his priorities staying away from comments and opinions on social media.

“At the end of the day, I’m doing what I think is right and I’m doing it all for my family, trying to give my friends some good days out. That’s what I do it for.”

“I’m very lucky to be making a living from doing something that I love doing… It’s nice to see you’re bringing joy to peoples faces.”
