Why do sports stars get involved in activism?

Ger was joined on today's Off the Ball Saturday Panel by former Dublin All-Ireland winner David Hickey, and former Irish internationals Hugo MacNeill and Trevor Hogan.

In the light of next weeks Referendums, Ger spoke to David, Hugo and Trevor about why sports stars become actively involved through sport in global events.

Hickey, who won three All Ireland titles with Dublin, wore a t-shirt to the All Ireland final in 1999 celebrating the 1974 All Ireland win bearing a slogan that said "End the blockade of Cuba".

In 1981, MacNeill decided to boycott and Irish tour to South Africa due to Apatheid. He was joined by Moss Keane and Tony Ward in boycotting the tour.

Trevor Hogan has been vocal in his support for the Palestinians and was part of a Freedom Flotilla in 2011 that attempted to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza.

The three men speak to Ger about their experiences and how it affected their careers and lives after they took their stances.

It was also announced this week that Hugo will be part of Ireland's bid team to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup, and he speaks briefly about his hopes for a successful bid with the help of the GAA, to follow the news that Ireland will host the Women's World Cup in 2017.
