Biniam Girmay became the first Black African cyclist to win a stage of the Tour de France this week. Described as a 'victory for Africa', the success of an Eritrean athlete in one of European sport's most prestigious events is indeed remarkable. Yet, in as much as it is a source of great joy, the surprising nature of Girmay's triumph serves to highlight more troubling aspects of Europe's relationship with Africa, and Girmay's native Eritrea particularly. Sally joined us on this evening's show to explain the harrowing aspects of that connection.
