Player ratings after Ireland's disappointing loss to Switzerland

Where would we be without Darren Randolph?

It was a night to forget in Geneva for this Ireland side as they lost 2-0 in what could have been a much bigger defeat. Randolph was the main reason the scoreline was not more humiliating as he came to the rescue on a number of occasions.

A spirited second-half performance from Ireland couldn't change the final result as the Boys in Green succumbed to their first loss of the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

1. Darren Randolph-8

Made some incredibly important saves from Swiss set-pieces and from long-range shots. He made a huge save from a penalty when the game was still in the balance. Easily Ireland's best player on the night.

2. Seamus Coleman-4

Defended doggedly but gave away the ball on a number of occasions which put the Irish back four in trouble. Was more of an attacking threat in the second half. Was sent off in the second half after receiving two yellow cards.

4. Shane Duffy-7

A stalwart at the back for the Irish side and made some important interceptions and clearances. Could have been in a better position for the opening goal but he was a constant threat in the box from set-pieces. Unfortunate with the own goal near the end of the game

5. John Egan-6

Coped well with the aerial threat from the Swiss and passed well out of the back at times. Looked more comfortable when Ireland went back to a more traditional back four.

3. Enda Stevens-6

Dependable on the right side of the back three dealing with Breel Embolo and Stefan Lichsteiner. His poor delivery out from the back though left Aaron Connolly chasing lost causes.

6. Glenn Whelan-5

Decent delivery from corners but he was caught out for the Seferovic goal and failed to hold on to possession for much of the game.

13. Jeff Hendrick-6

Linked up the play well through the midfield and really came to life in the second half when Ireland enjoyed more possession.

11. James McClean-3

Some really poor passages of play from the left wing-back and he constantly gave the ball away when in attacking positions.

8. Alan Browne-4

Looked out of his depth as the Swiss midfield played around and he struggled to contain Granit Xhaka in the centre of the park.

17. Aaron Connolly-6

Once again he was one of Ireland's bright sparks and he made the most of the poor service he received from midfield.

22. James Collins-4

Failed to link up effectively with his strike partner and struggled to really trouble the Swiss back three during the game.

Substitutes

18. Callum O'Dowda-5

Some neat passages of play from the young winger but he did not make any real impression on the game.

10. Scott Hogan-4

Was fairly ineffective when he came on with a half an hour to go.
