Peter Alliss | Check out some of his best moments in the commentary box

As news of Peter Alliss reached the sporting world this morning, memories were drawn to a man who was the soundtrack to many a moment, and many a youth.

The veteran commentator was 89 years of age.

Alliss became a lead commentator for BBC's golf coverage in 1978. He was active up until very recently, covering last month's Masters.

Speaking on his passing, Director of BBC Sport, Barbara Slater said "Peter was the voice of golf. He was an absolute master of his craft with a unique ability to capture a moment with a magical turn of phrase that no one else could match."

In a short statement from his family, it reads "It is with great sadness we announce the passing of golfing and broadcast legend Peter Alliss. Peter was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and his family ask for privacy at this difficult time"

The legendary commentator will be remembered fondly - some of his most memorable moments are below.

Peter Alliss: some of the best bits

One of the most memorable moments in the career of Peter Alliss was Jean van de Velde's nightmare round at the 1999 Open:

Alliss was a man of wit and warm humour, as he commentated on Nick Faldo's round and an unintended overheard commentary from the course:

Having experienced the best and worst of golf, Alliss gave his thoughts on St Andrews as a golf course:

Alliss brought his wit again to a... memorable warm-up by the unique Miguel Angel Jimenez:
