Pepe Reina: 'It's about time Liverpool won the Premier League'

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina believes "it's about time" that his former club ended the wait for an English league title.

The Merseysiders have never won the Premier League and their last top-flight success came in 1990 when Kenny Daglish was the manager.

Last season, the club came to within one point of champions Manchester City and went into the final day hoping Pep Guardiola's side slipped up.

Reina who is currently with Seria A side AC Milan played with Liverpool for nine years, winning an FA Cup and a League Cup. Speaking to the BBC, the Spanish international said, "it's unbelievable because to get 97 points and come second is just disgraceful. What else can you do to become champions? Credit to City, because I think they won the last 15 or 16 games, which is unbelievable."

Liverpool won their sixth European title in June. They defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid, by two goals to nil thanks to strikes from Mo Salah and Divock Origi.

"They've been working well in the last four years since Jurgen came to the club," said Reina. "And it's about time also, as I say United will be there, Chelsea will grow and Arsenal will come back. It's a competitive league. Right now though, I'd say Liverpool and City will be a close fight."

The former Liverpool keeper has also been impressed by their current netminder Alisson Becker, who signed in 2018 from Roma for €72.5 million (£66.8 million).

"Probably one of the best. Probably no, he is one of the best, surely in the world," said Pepe Reina about the current Liverpool keeper. "He's demonstrated from the beginning, which is not easy in the Premier League. The performances he's put on and probably the way Liverpool play suits very much with Alisson's way of playing.

"He will only become better and better because he's got the quality. He's got the right attitude and the experience of one year already and will only become better."
