Pep Guardiola unsure if Kompany replacement will be signed

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said they have not decided if they will buy a central defender as a replacement for former captain Vincent Kompany who has left the club.

Kompany who spent 11 years with the Blues won four Premier League titles has taken over as player-manager at Belgian club Anderlecht where he began his career as a youth player.

When asked about a replacement for the former Belgian captain coming into the club, Guardiola said, "there is a chance but I don't know if it will be possible. We have three good central defenders, Fernandinho can play in that position, so we will see.

"We are so happy in the squad that we have. I don't know what's going to happen at the end of the market; if the players still here are going to stay or if players are going to come. I'm delighted with the players we have."

It had been reported last month that English international Harry Maguire was set to join for over €100 million (£90 million), a fee which would trump the world record figure set by Liverpool when they signed Virgil van Dijk. Maguire signed a new contract with Leicester last September after signing for the Foxes in 2017 for €19.5 million (£17.5 million).

The two-time Premier League winning manager also spoke about the potential of German winger Leroy Sané going to German champions Bayern Munich. The deal has been reported to be close, but Guardiola says that it has been a saga, "for a long time, they have been talking about their interest in Leroy. But Leroy is our player and hopefully, he can stay here. And next season he stays with us."

And he when asked if he had been contacted by any representatives from his former club for the 23-year-old he replied, "no."

Manchester City became English league champions for the sixth time last season, edging out Liverpool by a point.
