Patrick Mahomes cleared for Kansas' AFC Championship clash with Buffalo

Reigning NFL champions Kansas have been handed a massive boost with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes cleared to face Buffalo in Sunday's AFC Championship decider.

Last year's SuperBowl MVP has come through the league's return to play protocols this week after being knocked out during the Chiefs' victory against the Browns last Sunday.

Mahomes trained with his teammates earlier today and he's expected to be named to start at Arrowhead this weekend.

Bills coach Sean McDermott revealed earlier that they've been preparing to face Mahomes.

"I guess at the beginning of the week we weren't quite sure, and we really won't know, I guess. It's probably trending in that direction, so that's what we're anticipating.''

Meanwhile Tampa Bay Buccaneers' wide receiver Antonio Brown has been ruled out of their NFC Championship game at Green Bay.

The veteran has been a knee injury sustained in last weekend's win against New Orleans and coach Bruce Arians has confirmed that Brown has lost his race to be fit.

"I just talked to him this morning, and to put him on the plane and fly up there and have it swell more doesn't make any sense," Arians told reporters. "He wasn't as close as we'd hoped, so we'll get him ready for the next one.

Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady says it "sucks" to be without Brown for Sunday's game but he's backing their other receivers to step up against the Packers.

"Other guys are gonna have to step up and do the job. I've got a lot of confidence in the guys that haven't been out there as much when AB's been in there."
