Pakistan knocked out of Cricket World Cup

Pakistan are officially out of the Cricket World Cup, coming up short in their last-ditch attempt to reach the semi-finals.

After making 315 for 9 in their final group game with Bangladesh, they needed to bowl their opponents out for 7 at Lords to qualify for the last-four.

But Bangladesh got past that score without loss - sending New Zealand through.

The 1992 champions required a victory by at least 308 runs to deny New Zealand a place in the semis.

Captain Sarfaraz Ahmed had admitted Pakistan would need a "miracle" after an innings where Babar Azam hit 96 runs and Imam-Ul-Haq 100.

Pakistan suffered a heavy defeat to the West Indies in their opening group match before recovering to defeat England, New Zealand, Afghanistan and South Africa.

Leaders Australia will top the group if they beat South Africa at Old Trafford tomorrow but a defeat for the Aussies would open the door for India to advance at the expense of the defending champions.

India would then need to overcame Sri Lanka at Headingley in order to finish ahead of Australia.

England will play either Australia or India in the last-four clash at Edgbaston next Thursday.
