Federer cruises into Wimbledon quarter-final as Manic Monday draws to a close

Eight-time champion Roger Federer booked his place in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon on Monday.

The 39-year-old beat Italian Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 on centre court.

It was the Swiss player's 118th time to win a match at Wimbledon.

Speaking to the BBC afterward, fan favourite Federer was particularly grateful for the support of the crowd.

"I heard congratulations at the end of the question - the rest was lost! Tricky conditions inside and out, and against Lorenzo who is always dangerous.

"But I felt after the first set I was able to control things.

"I couldn't be more excited to be in the quarters. Thank you guys for coming out and supporting and making it special."
