Laya Healthcare, the Official Health and Wellbeing Partner to Leinster Rugby, today released episode one of a three-part online series featuring World Rugby Player of the Year Johnny Sexton. ‘The Sexton Series’ takes an exclusive behind the scenes look at Johnny from his playing career, to his mindset to life outside rugby.
Episode One, ‘The Player’ begins with a very open conversation with Johnny talking about how he doubted himself a lot in his younger years, particularly when he saw his friends and people younger than him playing for Ireland.
Johnny highlights that he thought he would never be given the opportunity to play for Ireland: “There were moments where I thought I was never going to play for Ireland, even when I was 20 and 21, I saw my mates play for Ireland and people younger than me play for Ireland. At the time I was nowhere near it”.
Johnny continues: “I doubt myself a lot as well. I think athletes always have doubts. Doubts that keep you motivated.”
Episode One concludes with Johnny highlighting that the pressure put on professional players takes from the fun of the game and sometimes even leads to him questioning why he plays the game.
