Top seed Simona Halep out of French Open in straight sets

Top seed Simona Halep has been knocked out of the French Open at Roland Garros in straight sets.

Polish teenager Iga Swiatek took less than 70 minutes to dismiss the Wimbledon Champion.

The 54th-ranked Swiatek, a former Wimbledon junior champion and Roland-Garros junior doubles champion, hit 30 winners in a power-packed performance as she dismissed the top seed.

"I don't know what happened actually, I felt like I was playing perfectly, I was so focused the whole match, even I am surprised that I can to that," an elated Swiatek said on the court following the win.

It was a very different affair from the 2019 meeting of the pair when Halep, crushed Swiatek in a 45-minute rout. The win for Swiatek this time around put an end to a was on a 17-match winning streak entering the contest on Sunday and has now suffered her earliest Roland-Garros exit since 2016.

"I wasn't experienced at all then, that was my first match on a big stadium like that, so I was pretty stressed," Swiatek said of loss to Halep last year.

"Since then, I've made huge progress because I've played a few big matches, against Simona, against Caroline Wozniacki and Naomi Osaka, and I think it helped me a lot and now I feel like I can handle the pressure.

"But also I remember I lost against Simona last year and she lost against Amanda in the next round, so I felt that maybe I can do the same scenario, but we just change the names."

Swiatek has dropped just 16 games in her four Roland Garros matches and is the first Polish woman to make the French Open quarter-finals since Agnieszka Radwanska in 2013.

"It is my favourite. I always loved to play here, even when I was a junior," Swiatek said of Roland Garros.

"This week was like a dream come true for me and I hope it is going to be longer."
