Top 10 again for Roche as Bennett endures slog over mountains

Nicholas Roche has registered his second top-10 finish on this year’s Tour de France.

The Sunweb rider had been part of a breakaway group from early on the 16th stage, and eventually came home eighth.

Bora-Hansgrohe picked up their first stage win of this year's Tour, with Lennard Kamma leading the field home.

Today's stage had added significance for the Roche family, for it was at today's finish of Villard-de-Lans where Nicolas' father Stephen first pulled on the yellow jersey in 1987.

With the early breakaway hoovering up the points at today's intermediate sprint, Sam Bennett's lead in the green jersey contest was never challenged.

Bennett's main goal of the day was finishing inside the time limit, having been dropped by the peloton as they approached the 1st category climb of the Montée de Saint-Nizier-du-Moucherotte.

He maintained a 45-point lead over Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) in the battle for that green jersey.

Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo–Visma) retains the leader's yellow jersey, with his fellow Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) just 40-seconds back.

If today's stage was rough on the sprinters, Wednesday's promises to be even worse.

The peloton will take in the Hors catégorie climb up the Col de la Madeleine, before finishing on another Hors categorie in Méribel.
