Shelby Rogers expecting death threats after US Open defeat

Shelby Rogers believes she will receive 'nine million death threats' following her exit from the US Open.

The American lost out to English teenager Emma Raducanu in straight sets in their last 16 clash at Flushin Meadows.

Speaking afterwards, Rogers addressed the abuse she has been subject to on social media.

The 28-year-old from South Carolina said there was an added spotlight on her following her impressive third-round win over world number one Ashleigh Barty.

She stated her wish that 'social media didn't exist' in relation to the increased focus on her since that success.

"Obviously we appreciate the spotlight in those moments, but then you have today and I'm going to have nine million death threats and whatnot,"

"It's very much polarising, one extreme to the other very quickly."

Rogers says she tries not to pay attention to any negative comments on various platforms directed towards her, but that it 'does get to your head sometimes'.

"You could probably go through my profile right now. I'm probably a 'fat pig' and words that I can't say right now,"

"But it is what it is. You try not to take it to heart, and it's the unfortunate side of any sport and what we do."

"Social media can't control what I'm doing and the way my training is going to go moving forward, but I wish it didn't exist. It's really tough."

Quarter-finalists

Elsewhere at Flushing Meadows, Maria Sakkari overcame Bianca Andreescu in a gruelling encounter.

The pair were eventually separated after three-and-a-half hours play after the Greek 17th seed won 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.

The match finished at 2.15am local time.

Belinda Bencic also made her way through to the last eight after beating Iga Swiatek.

In the men's singles, Novak Djokovic recovered from losing the opening set to beat American youngster Jenson Brooksby.
