National Athletics Championships to preserve 147-year unbroken run

This year’s National Athletics Championships will be spread across two weekends later this month.

Santry’s Morton Stadium will host the games on August 22nd, 23rd, 29th and 30th.

Three sessions will be held each day and coaches banned from the stadium to keep numbers on site beneath 200.

The move preserves the 147-year unbroken run of the championships being staged.

They have been held every year since 1873, but were under severe threat as a result of COVID-19 and its associated restrictions.

Originally slated for June with the Olympic Games in mind, the National Championships were postponed until August.

The Government's unwillingness to move to phase-4 of their roadmap, however, left Athletics Ireland with a dilemma.

Inability to host gatherings of more than 500 left the National Championships in major doubt.

But it's hoped splitting the Championships across two weekends with a total of nine sessions will satisfy all parties.

In an effort to complete the championships, Athletics Ireland have asked that field athletes bring their own throwing implements (javelin, hammer, shot put, discus).

Athletes are required to leave Morton Stadium as soon as their event is completed, and no medal ceremonies will take place on either weekend.

All events are to be streamed across the two weekends.
