Michael Conlan moves another step closer to WBA world title

Michael Conlan has moved another step closer to securing his first world title.

The WBA have ordered a fight between reigning featherweight champion Leigh Wood, and Conlan - the interim title holder.

Conlan secured the interim title with a unanimous decision victory over TJ Doheny at Falls Park in Belfast earlier this month.

WBA president Gilberto Mendoza ordered the Conlan-Wood bout, and if no deal is reached by September 27 - Mike Coppinger reports - then a purse bid will be ordered.

Conlan appeared keen, judging by his "Let's go!!" tweet in response to the news.

The 2012 Olympic silver medalist is undefeated in his sixteen professional bouts to date.

Furthermore, it's reported that the winner of that fight will face WBA 'super' champion, Leo Santa Cruz.

Wood claimed the WBA world featherweight title with a twelfth round stoppage of Xu Can in Eddie Hearn's back garden at the end of July.

Last year Wood lost the WBO European featherweight tile to James Dickens. While he also has another victory over an Irish Olympian - David Oliver Joyce - to his name in 2019.
