Katie Taylor is the Sport Ireland / Irish Times Sportswoman of the Year

World lightweight boxing champion Katie Taylor has been crowned the Sport Ireland / Irish Times Sportswoman of the Year for a fifth time.

The Bray native currently holds the WBC, IBF, WBO, and WBA lightweight titles.

Taylor won her first monthly Sport Ireland / Irish Times award back in 2005.

Since turning professional, the 2012 Olympic champion has swept all before her in the elite ranks.

The 34-year-old has won all 17 of her bouts as a professional.

Taylor defeated Belgian Delphine Persoon in August in what was a unanimous points decision in Essex.

It was an assertion of authority by Taylor, who edged Persoon in their first bout in New York.

Taylor then recorded a straightforward win over Miriam Gutierrez in November.

There were other high achievers on the shortlist for these awards - monthly winners included Fionnuala McCormack in athletics, Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal in cycling, jockey Rachael Blackmore, football player Diane Caldwell, boxer Kellie Harrington, Cork Gaelic footballer Orlagh Farmer, sprinter Gina Akpe-Moses, middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean, handball's Martina McMahon, rower Sanita Puspure and golfer Stephanie Meadow.
